The booster will return to land at the launch site on its 6 legs. The Starship payload fairing is 9 m in diameter and 18 m high, resulting in the largest usable payload volume of any current or in development launcher.
This payload volume can be configured for both crew and cargo. Starship is designed to deliver satellites further and at a lower marginal cost per launch than our current Falcon vehicles.
With a payload compartment larger than any fairing currently in operation or development, Starship creates possibilities for new missions, including space telescopes even larger than the James Webb.
Starship can deliver both cargo and people to and from the ISS. The aft cargo containers can also host a variety of payloads.
Developing bases to support future space exploration requires the transport of large amounts of cargo to the Moon for research and human spaceflight development.
Starship is designed to carry these building blocks. Each quadrant was named after a significant geologic terrain on Earth, where geologists also divide the terrain they explore into quadrants.
The practice of dividing the terrain Curiosity explores into quadrants continued after Curiosity departed the landing ellipse, to not only help focus mapping and path planning efforts, but to serve as a source of the names we assign to targets imaged, shot, drilled, or scooped.
Over this time, all the targets we have named have required pages and pages of place names from Scotland and Scotland adjacent provided mostly by our team member Dr.
John Bridges University of Leicester. The Nontron quadrant name is particularly appropriate for the clay-bearing terrain we find ourselves in, as Nontron is the type locality for a clay mineral called nontronite.
Nontronite is part of the smectite group of clays, which are the most common types of clays on Mars. While undoubtedly the coolest name in the plan, Saxa Vord Spaceport was far from the only target name used in our busy plan.
APXS, MAHLI and Mastcam will get a closer look at Easthouses after ChemCam shoots it. Mastcam also planned images of the terrain around us near and far.
On each sol of the plan, DAN will seek the signal of hydrogen in the ground below us using both their active and passive modes, REMS will record the weather conditions, and RAD will monitor the radiation environment.
These systematic measurements are complemented by images from Navcam and Mastcam that will hopefully capture clouds and dust devils and will measure the amount of dust in the skies above all the quadrants in Gale.
ChemCam will also acquire measurements on Tomb of the Eagles, which is useful for comparing observations from different instruments on the same target.
The latter two targets were selected for especially long rasters 20 points instead of the usual in order to better characterize chemical variability in these rocks.
One mosaic is on the exposed outcrop right next to our workspace; these outcrops appear as ridges in orbital images and on-the-ground images will help us determine how these ridges formed.
The second mosaic looks farther away at the contact between the fractured intermediate unit and the rubbly unit on top of it.
Other activities in this weekend plan include a routine APXS calibration activity, and many atmospheric observations monitoring the environment, including Navcam movies, dust devil surveys, and Mastcam taus.
On Sol , we will drive and continue our path to the sulfate-bearing unit. On Sol , we will let Curiosity take a breather, with just REMS atmospheric measurements and basic engineering activities in the plan.
After this long weekend, Curiosity and her planning team will return refreshed for more planning next week! The Kalinin and Western Fronts were directed by Stalin and Zhukov "to crush the Rzhev-Sychovka-Olenino-Bely enemy grouping. Operation Mars was to be followed soon afterward by Operation Jupiter, which was to commence two to three weeks later.
The Western Front's powerful 5th and 33rd armies, supported by 3rd Guards Tank Army , would attack along the Moscow-Vyazma highway axis, link up with the victorious Mars force, and envelop and destroy all German forces east of Smolensk.
Once resistance around Vyazma was neutralized, the 9th and 10th Tank Corps and the 3rd Tank Army would then penetrate deeper into the rear of Army Group Centre.
The offensive was launched in the early hours of 25 November It got off to a bad start, as fog and snowy weather grounded the planned air support.
It also greatly reduced the effect of the massive artillery barrages preceding the main attacks by making it impossible for the forward artillery observers to adjust fire and observe the results.
The northern thrust made little progress. The eastern attack across the frozen Vazuza river slowly ground forward.
The two western thrusts made deeper penetrations, especially around the key town of Belyi. Still, the progress was nowhere near what the Soviets expected.
The German defenders fought stubbornly, clinging to their strong-points, which were often centered on many of the small villages dotting the area.
In some cases, the German strong points remained manned for a time after the Soviets advanced past them, creating more problems for the Red Army in their rear areas.
Despite repeated, persistent Soviet attacks, German small-arms fire and pre-planned artillery concentrations cut down the attacking Soviet infantry.
Soviet tanks were picked off by anti-tank guns and the few German tanks, as well as in close combat with infantry. The relative lack of initial success compounded the Soviet problems.
The minor penetrations and the resulting small bridgeheads made it difficult to bring forward reinforcements and follow-up forces, especially artillery so critical for reducing the German strong points.
The Germans reacted by shifting units within the salient against the points of the Soviet advance and pinching off their spearheads.
With limited reserves and reinforcement unlikely due to Soviet offensives elsewhere, the Ninth Army was placed under great pressure. Eventually the shifting of German forces, coupled with Soviet losses and supply difficulties, allowed the German forces to gain the upper hand.
Their lines held, and they retook much of the lost ground. The German counterattacks against the Belyi western and the Vazuza eastern Soviet thrusts resulted in several thousand Soviet soldiers being trapped behind German lines.
A few of them managed to break through to Soviet lines, some after fighting in the German rear for weeks.
